XC Success at Ampleforth

The senior Cross Country team braved the wind and made the trip across the Pennines to our rivals Ampleforth for what is the first of two fixtures in five days.

The conditions could only be described as blustery, this meant the usual route taking in the large wooded escarpment to the south of the college was out of bounds. Given this an alternative poor weather route was utilised, which turned out to be a fast 5km, with a nice sharp climb right at the start, the rest of the route being predominantly either flat or downhill.

Stonyhurst fielded a strong team made up of seasoned senior runners, for some this was their forth trip to Ampleforth, along with a single Grammarian and Syntaxian. Stonyhurst dominated the race from the start, with Will and Max setting the pace. The race initially climbed from the valley floor up towards the school, in the first 3/4km of the race the first two positions had already been decided.

In the end Stonyhurst took the first overall position through Will and Max coming in just under a minute behind. We managed a clean sweep taking the first five positions, and as it was first five to count this wrapped up the competition!

Many thanks to Ampleforth for putting on the event and hosting us for the afternoon, the boys always enjoy the trip, even without stopping for the obligatory McDonalds on the way home!
