For the third time, St Mary’s Hall attended the annual Packwood hockey tournament.  Each year the competition has grown and the standard of play has improved.

The squad had been involved in two tournaments prior to half term and therefore understood that every minute counts.  They managed to hold on to a draw for the first game, and then went on to take four consecutive wins.  Having played all the games in the group stage the girls finished top of the leader board having scored 10 and conceded 0 goals.

In the semi -finals they played a strong King’s Chester side.  SMH sneaked an early first goal and were then put under pressure for the remainder of the game.  Charlotte W made some excellent saves, one of which bounced off her helmet when she dived to protect her right post.  The defence looked well organised and King’s Chester could not find a way through, resulting in a 1-0 win for  SMH and a ticket to the final.

The final match was played against Sedbergh. It was a well fought game with both teams coming very close to scoring.  On the final whistle Sedbergh won a short corner, and the only thing SMH had to do was clear out lines to hold onto the draw.  Molly N made an excellent run out and swept the ball away from the Sedbergh attack to clear the SMH defence in advance of the full time whistle.  With a 0-0 draw at full time the game went into sudden death!  Again, the last five minutes were played with enormous intensity, and the girls worked hard to chase down every ball.  Sedbergh won a free hit form just outside the circle and managed to convert in the dying minute.  The game finished 1-0 to Sedbergh.   Despite the result it was an incredible day; the girls gave their absolute best, fully deserved their place in the final and are the proud owners of shiny silver medals.
