Meet the Head

John Browne, Headmaster

At Stonyhurst, we believe we can give our pupils that extra edge which will allow them to go further in life.

John Browne, Headmaster

John Browne has a postgraduate LLB from City University, London and a Masters in Business Administration. His BA was in Music from the University of Bristol. Stonyhurst is his third Headship in independent day and boarding schools having been Headmaster of both Westminster Cathedral Choir School and St. Aloysius’ College, Glasgow. John is married to Marie, and they have a son, William and two dogs Henry and Hector.

Stonyhurst is a school which constantly looks to innovate and use its proud history and traditions as a lens on the present and future. At the heart of everything that we do is delivering an exceptional education for our pupils and ensuring that their formation, both inside and outside of the classroom, is the best in the world. We empower them to be the best that they can be, shaping leaders of the future.

We like to get to know our pupils as well as possible, to know what ‘makes them tick’ and to challenge them to achieve their personal best academically and in many other areas of school life. Academic performance and exam results are really important but we also place huge emphasis on emotional and spiritual growth too.

Above all, we want the OS (Stonyhurst alumni) who leave us to be prepared to live a life of purpose as men and women for others.”
