NHS Services

NHS services, whilst generally excellent, do not provide the same level of service observed within the private healthcare, of other countries.

NHS Services are free at the point of need, to UK ordinary residents. In recent years the demand on the NHS has caused services to be stretched beyond capacity, causing an increase in waiting times and delays in appointments, diagnosis, and treatment.

GP services are the first point of access for non-urgent care and are accessed on an appointed system. Stonyhurst boarders are automatically registered with the school doctors and have access to two weekly clinics at Stonyhurst on Monday & Friday’s. Emergency GP appointments can be arranged at all other times and routine GP services are available Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm.

GP’s can refer to other NHS services and are experts in family medicine, preventative care, health education and care for people with multiple or long-term health conditions. Being registered with a GP may mean pupils will be offered screening services, vaccinations, chronic condition reviews.

Urgent Care, minor injuries and Walkin centres can be accessed without an appointment and are usually open 24 hours / 7 days a week.

Accident and Emergency departments are available at some hospitals. These are accessible 24 hours a day. Due to the demand on these services, significant waiting times can occur at peak times. A & E services do not provide written documentation detailing consultation discussion, X-rays, investigation results or treatment plans. A brief discharge summary is routinely sent to the GP surgery, this information can be obtained upon request.

The NHS 111 telephone service offers support, advice, and referral to an out of hours GP service 24 hours a day.

Dental, Orthodontic and Optician services are not included on the NHS and incur additional charges.

Private consultations, investigations and treatment can be arranged by the Health & Wellbeing team for non-urgent care, however as private healthcare is limited in the UK, appointments may not be available immediately. Such appointments would incur additional charges.

All Stonyhurst pupils attending external NHS appointments or services, are escorted by a medical escort. Parents will be updated on consultations, investigations and treatment plans following a pupils return to school.
