Ten year old Rebecca Hayhurst has donated a ceramic poppy, from the recent Tower of London installation, to Stonyhurst. The poppy was received in a short ceremony on Monday February 2nd, attended by Rebecca and her family, cadet under officers from the school’s Combined Cadet Corps, Lt Col Andrew Barber and RSM Robert Clare. Stonyhurst’s chaplain, Fr John Twist SJ blessed the poppy before it was placed on the College War Memorial. Lt Col Barber then presented Rebecca with a Stonyhurst College CCF plaque.

Rebecca, who is in year 6 at St Joseph’s RC Primary School, Hurst Green, said: “I wanted to give my poppy to Stonyhurst because seven former pupils have been awarded the Victoria Cross. Also, the Combined Cadet Corps does a very good job.” Rebecca’s family has a long association with Stonyhurst; three generations have worked at the school, including her grandmother, who worked at the College for almost 38 years. Lt Col Barber said: “We are extremely touched by Rebecca’s gift, and honoured that she chose to place one of the Tower of London’s highly sought-after poppies on our War Memorial.”
