JOHN BROWNE – HEADMASTER, STONYHURST
John Browne was appointed Headmaster of Stonyhurst in 2016.
Stonyhurst is John’s third Headship in independent boarding and day schools. Prior to joining Stonyhurst, John was Headmaster of St. Aloysius’s College Glasgow and deputy Headmaster of Ampleforth College. He is a former Headmaster of Westminster Cathedral Choir School.
John is an alumnus of St Ignatius’s College Enfield, a Jesuit secondary school in London.
John obtained his BA (Hons) in Music from the University of Bristol. He has a postgraduate LLB from City University, London and a MBA. John is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists.
John is a Governor of St John’s Beaumont, a Jesuit day and boarding preparatory school in Old Windsor.
John is married to Marie, and they have a son, William and two dogs Henry and Hector.
STEPHEN WITHNELL – DEPUTY HEAD (EXTERNAL), STONYHURST
Stephen is an alumnus of Stonyhurst and a current parent to two pupils. Stephen serves as Deputy Head (External) at Stonyhurst. Stephen is an experienced executive and non-executive director with a background in economics, finance, and governance.
In March 2020 Stephen was appointed an Honorary Professor in the Department of Economics and Finance of Durham University. He is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board of Durham University Business School and of the Investment Committee of the British Province of the Jesuits. He is a former Governor of Stonyhurst and of Westminster Cathedral Choir School.
Stephen is a former Managing Director of Goldman Sachs International. He joined Goldman Sachs in 2006 and retired in 2018, having been Head of Metals & Mining Investment Banking for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Stephen has advised on over US$150 Billion of strategic reviews, board assignments, mergers and acquisitions, corporate takeovers and equity and debt capital markets transactions. He is a Freeman of the City of London. Stephen is also an alumnus of St Ignatius’s College Riverview, an independent Jesuit secondary school in Australia.
Stephen obtained his BA (1st Class Hons) in History from Durham University, where he was JCR President of University College. He is currently completing a DPhil in Architectural History at the University of Oxford.
Stephen is married to Victoria and they have two sons, both of whom attend Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall.
IAN MURPHY – HEADMASTER, STONYHURST ST MARY’S HALL
Ian Murphy was appointed Headmaster of Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall in 2014.
Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall is Ian’s second Headship in independent boarding and day schools. Prior to joining Stonyhurst, Ian was Headmaster of All Hallows Preparatory School in Somerset for 10 years.
Ian is an alumnus of Wimbledon College, a Jesuit secondary school in London.
Ian obtained his BA (Hons) in Psychology and his PGCE from Durham University, where he was a member of Hatfield College. Earlier in his career Ian held teaching and leadership positions in both the maintained and independent sectors.
Ian’s wife, Rachel, teaches at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall and both of their children have attended Stonyhurst.
SIMON MARSDEN – BURSAR AND CLERK TO THE GOVERNORS, STONYHURST
Simon Marsden was appointed Bursar and Clerk to the Governors of Stonyhurst in 2016.
Stonyhurst is Simon’s third Bursarial role in independent schools. Simon commenced his career in banking before moving into education-based private equity and then into bursarial roles. He is a fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.
Simon obtained his BA (Hons) in Business Management and holds qualifications in accountancy, human resources, leadership coaching and business planning. Simon has been Chairman of the Northern Bursars’ Association and sits on a selection of independent schools’ advisory panels.
Simon is a Foundation Governor of St Joseph’s RC School Hurst Green, the oldest Catholic primary school in the United Kingdom.
Simon is married to Julia. They have four children, two of whom attend Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall.
