The ‘Stonyhurst College at the Movies’ concert will be remembered as a very special evening for a long time to come. An audience of pupils, parents, staff and members of the public filled the Top Ref on Friday 28th March, and it was clear from their rapturous applause that the concert was a big, Oscar-winning hit.

The concert was the inspiration of Shannon Gateley (Rhetoric), who has spent many hours arranging all the music for for Stonyhurst’s orchestra, Big Band, choir, string, brass and flute ensembles. She has organised and led hundreds of rehearsals since the beginning of term; these, and the whole-hearted support of her fellow musicians, resulted in a first class evening of music.

A talented trumpeter, flautist and pianist, Shannon wanted to enhance her study of A level Music with a practical project, and her concert will lead to an Extended Project Qualification. As well as devising the programme, Shannon wrote extensive programme notes about each piece and tried to create the atmosphere of a cinema: Charlie Chaplain and John Wayne flickered on a screen as popcorn and ice-cream were sold at the interval!
The concert was compered by Mrs Allanson, who has guided and supported Shannon throughout the project (as well as playing flute and saxophone in the ensembles). At the end of the concert, Shannon presented her with a bouquet, thanking her and everyone involved, for their support.
