The Spanish Exchange

Stonyhurst has hosted the fourteenth annual Spanish Exchange with its partner Jesuit school San José Jesuitak in Durango in the Basque Country. Each year as part of the Exchange the pupils collaborate on a joint Project funded by the British Council Comenius scheme. This year saw phase two on the topic of the Environment, on which the sixteen Grammarians (Year 10 pupils) collaborated with their partners. A trip was organised to Bowland Bioenergy, a local company based near Downham, which produces wood fuel for heating biomass. (Stonyhurst is heated by Bowland Bioenergy’s wood chip.) Pupils discovered that Bowland Bioenergy was Ribble Valley Business Award Winner in 2014 and are highly regarded in their field. The Spanish students learnt about woodland harvesting and sustainability and saw the process of manufacture from timber logs to chip. There were also trips to Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry and Southport Eco Centre.

Maria Albizuri and Jasone Lasuen from San José Jesuitak wrote this account of the exchange:

We travelled to Stonyhurst for two weeks as part of our Comenius project.  These weeks have been very interesting because we have met our English partners and this is what we have liked most. We have had a lot of activities and have attended classes, which are very different from our classes in Durango.  All of the teachers have been very nice. We have worked on the project “Environment and sustainability”, sometimes on our own and sometimes with our partners and we have visited  places related to the project such as Southport Eco Centre, Bowland Bioenergy and the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. We have also had special classes such as Arts, Literature and English; my favourite was Shooting with Sergeant Clare, who was very nice. The trip to Old Trafford was amazing and we also went shopping. The food has also been different from home but it was fine. Stonyhurst is a great boarding school, we have been very happy here and now we are looking forward to our partners coming to Durango in March!
