Photography

Subject Overview

Photography at Stonyhurst invites pupils to explore the medium as both an art form and a means of communication. The course develops technical skill and creative independence through studio lighting, digital and darkroom practices, and experimental approaches such as cyanotypes and alternative processes. Pupils are encouraged to investigate themes of identity, place, culture, and storytelling while refining their own photographic style.

The inspiring surroundings of Stonyhurst — from its historic architecture to the 1,000-acre estate and dramatic Lancashire landscapes — provide a unique backdrop for creative exploration. Pupils are able to draw on these rich settings for both inspiration and practical work.

From September 2025, pupils will also benefit from Stonyhurst’s newly expanded Art and Design facilities. State-of-the-art studios and specialist equipment will further enhance opportunities for exploration, enabling pupils to produce ambitious, professional-standard outcomes within a supportive, creative environment.
