Subject Overview
Drama at Stonyhurst is a challenging, creative and intellectually stimulating subject that encourages pupils to explore the world through performance, collaboration and critical thinking. Combining practical and academic study, it develops confident, articulate and reflective learners who communicate ideas effectively, solve problems creatively and work successfully with others.
Pupils study a broad range of theatre, dramatic literature and influential practitioners through rehearsal, discussion, analysis and performance. They learn how theatre reflects society and culture while developing their own creative responses to different styles, genres and historical periods.
Drama equips pupils with valuable transferable skills, including confidence in public speaking, resilience, empathy, leadership and teamwork. As they progress, they develop increasingly sophisticated performance, directing and evaluative skills alongside a deeper understanding of the creative process.
Learning extends beyond the theatre. Pupils make imaginative use of Stonyhurst's historic buildings and grounds for site-specific performance, exploring how space and environment shape theatre. Our internationally significant museum collections also provide unique creative inspiration, allowing pupils to work directly with historical artefacts and explore themes of history, identity and storytelling.
