Music

Subject overview

At Stonyhurst, a full range of academic and instrumental tuition is offered in our historic purpose-built Music Department. We have a growing concert calendar, featuring performances ranging from solo recitals to large-scale ensemble concerts, and from liturgical choirs to musicals. We offer tuition on all orchestral and popular instruments through the week on an individual basis, and pupils have the benefit of several practice rooms, including five soundproofed ‘pods’ which enable musicians to practise without being overheard.

Music in the curriculum is linked closely with co-curricular music, and all pupils who select Music as an option will certainly be expected to participate fully in the wider life of the Department. However, this participation is very much open to all pupils, and some of our highest-achieving performers have not taken A level or IB Music.

We have music scholarships available at 13+ and 16+; for more information, see the annual Directory of the Music Teachers’ Association, which is sent to all prep schools and junior conservatoires, or contact the Director of Music directly using the button below.
