Music
Subject overview
At Stonyhurst, a full range of academic and instrumental tuition is offered in our historic purpose-built Music Department. We have an extensive concert calendar, featuring performances ranging from solo recitals to large-scale ensemble concerts, and from liturgical choirs to musicals. We offer tuition on all orchestral and popular instruments through the week on an individual basis, and pupils have the benefit of several practice rooms, including seven soundproofed ‘pods’ which enable musicians to practise without being overheard.
Music in the curriculum is linked closely with co-curricular music, and all pupils who select Music as an option will certainly be expected to participate fully in the wider life of the Department. However, this participation is very much open to all pupils, and some of our highest-achieving performers have not taken A level or IB Music.
We also have Music Scholarships available at 11+, 13+ and 16+; for more information, please contact our Director of Music.
**Please note that Music will not be available to pupils studying the IB Diploma during the 2024/25 academic year. Any enquiries for this subject as part of the IBDP will now be considered to start in September 2025.**
