In Figures and Rudiments (Years 7 and 8), pupils follow a broad and ambitious curriculum taught by subject-specialist teachers across all disciplines. Languages are delivered by qualified modern language specialists, with pupils choosing to study French, Spanish or German, ensuring accurate linguistic foundations and cultural understanding from the outset. Latin is offered as an extension activity for able and talented pupils, led by specialist staff outside of the core curriculum.

To maximise academic progress, pupils are taught in streamed sets for Mathematics, English and Languages, allowing subject specialists to tailor teaching to ability, pace and potential. In other subjects and activities, pupils are taught in mixed-ability groups, supporting collaborative learning and encouraging pupils to broaden their social horizons within a supportive Middle School environment.

This specialist-led academic structure provides rigour, clarity and continuity, while ensuring pupils benefit from the pastoral care and oversight appropriate to Years 7 and 8.

Importantly, pupils have four years to acclimate to the College before commencing their GCSE studies, allowing for a smooth transition into senior education.

Stonyhurst’s Middle School for Year 7 and 8 offers a carefully structured introduction to senior school life. Designed as a supportive bridge between prep and senior education, it provides pupils with the academic challenge, pastoral care and independence needed to thrive.

With the option to join at Year 7 or transition naturally at Year 9, families can choose the pathway that best suits their child’s development.

Creativity is central to Middle School learning at Stonyhurst. Pupils benefit from access to the College’s new Art & Design Centre, including specialist studios for Textile Design and Design & Technology, supported by subject-specialist teaching.

Within these purpose-built spaces, pupils develop practical skills alongside creative thinking—experimenting with materials, learning design processes and exploring problem-solving through making. The emphasis is on curiosity, craftsmanship and confidence, helping pupils express ideas visually and technically from an early stage.

Every Middle School pupil is supported by a dedicated tutor who plays a central role in both academic oversight and pastoral care. Tutors monitor progress across subjects, support organisation and study habits, and provide a consistent point of contact for pupils and families.

Working closely with subject teachers and house staff, tutors ensure that each pupil is known as an individual. This strong pastoral framework helps pupils build confidence, resilience and independence during the important transition into senior school life.

Central to the experience is the innovative Adventure curriculum, led by Stonyhurst’s Director of Adventure. This program includes an exciting outdoor activities like archery and kayaking, designed to cultivate essential skills in teamwork, resilience, and character development. Year 7 and 8 pupils take part in the Adventure programme every Wednesday as part of their timetable.

Pupils will rotate through a series of activities and experiences designed to challenge them and develop new skills, as well as introducing them to the magnificent Stonyhurst estate. Activities will include: Bushcraft, Paddle Boarding, Mountain Biking, Fencing*, Lazer Tag, Fishing, First Aid Training, Archery, Orienteering and Clay Pigeon Shooting. 

All other years in the College embark on the Co-curricular Diploma programme from Year 9.

The Middle School STEAM curriculum brings together Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics through purposeful, project-based learning. From Year 7, pupils are encouraged to explore ideas across subjects, apply knowledge in practical contexts and develop confidence in problem-solving.

STEAM projects are designed to be hands-on and exploratory, allowing pupils to design, test, refine and evaluate their work. Whether investigating scientific principles, solving design challenges or applying mathematical reasoning to real-world problems, pupils learn to think critically, collaborate effectively and persevere through challenge.

Learning is supported by access to specialist spaces, including the Art & Design Centre, where pupils can translate ideas into physical outcomes through Design & Technology and Textile Design projects. This integrated approach helps pupils see connections between disciplines, encouraging creativity alongside technical understanding.

The STEAM curriculum develops curiosity, adaptability and intellectual confidence, preparing pupils for the breadth and depth of senior school study and equipping them with skills for an increasingly complex world.

Aloysius House offers a friendly co-educational setting for both day pupils and boarders, serving as the ideal introduction to Stonyhurst life. 

The term ‘Playroom’ is a long-held tradition at Stonyhurst and is derived from the emphasis on drama within a Jesuit education. The newly renovated Aloysius House, within Stonyhurst College, is the home of Figures (Year 7) and Rudiments (Year 8) Playrooms which have been thoughtfully designed to encourage relaxation, play, study and interaction.

Day and boarding pupils register in Aloysius House Playroom at 8:10am. On Mondays, the whole College attends the Headmaster’s Assembly in St Peter’s Church. Each lesson begins with The Examen – a calm, prayerful reflection to express gratitude and set intentions – before starting lessons at 8:30 or 9:00, depending on the day.

Collection times are 5:00pm (after lessons), 5:45pm (after activities), 6:15pm (after supper), or 7:15pm (after Studies). Timings should be confirmed with your Playroom Leader, and sign-out is at the Glass Doors. Day transport is available at 7:00pm. On Thursdays, pick-up is at 4:00pm, and on Saturdays at 3:00pm.
