Adventure
The Stonyhurst Diploma - Adventure
At Stonyhurst College, we believe in the profound impact of the natural environment on personal development, character formation, and lifelong learning. Each of these programmes is designed to provide Stonyhurst pupils with unique opportunities for personal growth, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation of the natural world. By participating in these activities, pupils not only develop practical skills but also cultivate qualities such as leadership, resilience, and environmental mindfulness, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges of the future.
Rooted in Jesuit traditions since 1593, Stonyhurst’s mission has always been to educate the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Our location in the beautiful Ribble Valley offers the perfect backdrop for adventure-based learning, allowing pupils to engage with nature in a meaningful and enriching way.
All pupils have the opportunity to take part in timetabled outdoor activities throughout the week and at Weekends as part of the Weekend Adventure Programme.
The Adventure Programme, designed specifically for pupils in Figures and Rudiments, is an exciting new addition to Stonyhurst’s co-curricular offering which they take part in during the school day. It gives pupils the chance to explore a wide range of outdoor and adventurous activities, building confidence, teamwork, and new skills. Working in five-week blocks, pupils rotate through six different activities each year—developing both proficiency and a spirit of adventure as they go.

Benefits of Outdoor Learning
Outdoor education is proven to enhance mental health, physical fitness, and emotional well-being. It encourages pupils to step outside their comfort zones, discover their strengths, and grow in confidence. In today’s fast-paced, screen-focused world, this kind of hands-on, nature-based learning is more important than ever.
Through structured adventures and environmental education, our pupils also develop a lifelong appreciation for nature and a deep sense of environmental responsibility.

Leadership, Community, and Global Citizenship
Adventure education at Stonyhurst is not just about outdoor skills—it’s about leadership, service, and global citizenship. Pupils learn to plan expeditions, solve problems collaboratively, and support one another in unfamiliar situations. These shared experiences foster empathy, communication, and cultural understanding.
Whether it’s navigating a climbing route or organising a group expedition, our pupils gain the confidence and character needed to succeed—both at school and in life.
