Performing Arts
Drama at Stonyhurst
At Stonyhurst, drama is a vital part of the co-curricular experience, empowering pupils to explore creativity, communication, and confidence through performance. As one of the most child-centred and expressive subjects, drama plays a key role in shaping well-rounded individuals, ready to engage with the world around them.
A Rich Theatrical Tradition
Drama at Stonyhurst is steeped in history. Our use of the word "Playroom" to describe year groups comes directly from our Jesuit tradition, where pupils performed plays in their social spaces. This long-standing connection to the performing arts celebrates the belief that confidence, creativity and character are best nurtured on stage. Past productions have ranged from classic Shakespeare to imaginative adaptations—such as a memorable reworking of Macbeth featuring “Uncle Donald”—showcasing our commitment to both tradition and innovation.
Why Drama Matters
Drama offers pupils a universal language to express ideas, emotions, and identity. Regardless of gender, ability, or cultural background, pupils respond intuitively to storytelling, performance, and role-play. Through drama, they engage with complex issues such as morality, empathy and social responsibility in a safe and structured way.
This subject also supports the development of crucial skills for the future, including:
-
Public speaking and performance confidence
-
Teamwork and collaboration
-
Critical thinking and creative problem-solving
-
Empathy and cultural awareness
-
Leadership and adaptability

Inclusive and International
With a diverse international pupil body, drama at Stonyhurst fosters an inclusive environment where different cultures, languages and perspectives are celebrated. The performing arts offer an accessible platform for all pupils to express themselves, share their heritage, and develop mutual respect. This cross-cultural dialogue enriches our community and deepens our understanding of global traditions in the arts.
Developing the Whole Person
As part of a broad and balanced co-curricular programme, drama at Stonyhurst supports the personal, spiritual, and emotional development of every pupil. Pupils are encouraged to take creative risks, reflect on their experiences, and develop a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts.
Whether performing, directing or supporting behind the scenes, every pupil has the opportunity to be involved in productions that inspire, entertain and challenge.
