Pastoral Hub

Pastoral Excellence

Pastoral care is central to life at Stonyhurst. The Pastoral Hub provides dedicated emotional, social and mental wellbeing support, ensuring every pupil feels safe, understood and empowered to flourish both academically and personally.

The Hub operates an open-door policy, offering a calm, welcoming space within the College. Pupils may be referred by parents, Houseparents, Playroom Leaders, tutors, safeguarding staff or the Health Centre - and may also seek support independently. Our approach is collaborative and integrated, working closely with SEND, Safeguarding, Boarding and the Health & Wellbeing Centre to ensure joined-up care.

A Dedicated Team

The Pastoral Hub is led by our Pastoral Coordinator and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead, supported by three full-time Pastoral Assistants and three qualified Counsellors. Together, the team brings extensive experience in education, safeguarding, psychotherapy and trauma-informed practice.

Their shared belief is simple: when pupils feel safe, supported and valued, meaningful learning can take place.

Personalised Support

Structured Programmes & Group Interventions

Alongside individual mentoring and counselling, the Hub delivers targeted group programmes designed to equip pupils with practical tools and life skills.

Our Sleep Hygiene programme helps pupils understand the science of sleep and develop sustainable routines, an area in which Stonyhurst has been recognised with Sleep Champion status from the Boarding Schools’ Association.

Through Team Building and Resilience sessions, pupils develop problem-solving skills, confidence and leadership through practical challenges, with opportunities to gain ASDAN LifeSkills accreditation.

Healthy Relationships interventions explore boundaries, communication and conflict resolution, while mediation sessions help pupils navigate friendship challenges constructively.

We also support pupils in developing healthy digital behaviours, encouraging critical thinking around social media, AI and online information. Our Healthy Eating programme combines practical cooking sessions with education around nutrition and wellbeing, again offering ASDAN accreditation where appropriate.

Where pupils require support around behaviour, we use a restorative approach that encourages reflection, accountability and positive change.

A Whole-School Approach to Wellbeing

The Pastoral Hub sits within a wider, multi-disciplinary wellbeing network. Working alongside the Mental Health Lead, Boarding staff, the Health Centre and senior pupil representatives, we deliver whole-school initiatives covering mental health awareness, anti-bullying, health and nutrition, environmental responsibility and international culture.

Pastoral care is not isolated — it is embedded across College life. Whether a concern relates to safeguarding, SEND, academic pressure, physical health or emotional wellbeing, pupils are supported through a joined-up pathway that ensures no one falls through the gaps.

Partnerships & Accreditation

Our work is strengthened through alignment with respected national organisations, including the Boarding Schools’ Association (LifeSkills Awards), ASDAN, Trauma Informed Lancashire, Girls on Board, the Anti-Bullying Alliance and Lancashire County Council’s “With You” service. These partnerships ensure our practice remains current, informed and externally benchmarked.

Meet the Team

The Pastoral Hub offers more than intervention; it offers reassurance. A place to pause. A place to talk. A place to rebuild confidence.

When pupils feel secure in themselves, they are better able to take intellectual risks, form positive relationships and embrace the full opportunities of Stonyhurst life.
