Sport

Sport is part of our DNA

Sport sits at the very heart of life at Stonyhurst College and plays a central role in our mission to develop the whole person. Our philosophy is simple: we aim to support and develop every pupil, maximising individual potential through high-quality coaching, personalised support and a strong focus on the student-athlete.

Whether a pupil is representing the College at county level or discovering a sport for the first time, they are valued, encouraged and challenged to become the best version of themselves. Participation in sport is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and enhances academic performance, collaboration, concentration, self-confidence and leadership skills.

Stonyhurst’s rich sporting traditions thrive alongside a modern and inclusive approach. All sports are supported and invested in equally, ensuring consistency of experience, coaching and opportunity across the programme. This commitment enables pupils to enjoy both competitive success and a lifelong love of physical activity.

Our success is reflected in the growing number of pupils representing the College at county, regional and national level, and in strong performances across national competitions. Rugby remains a particular strength, with the U18 squad reaching the County Cup final for three consecutive years and several age groups crowned county champions.

Sport at Stonyhurst is about far more than competition. It is a powerful vehicle for building character, resilience, respect and leadership. It is in our DNA, and we encourage every pupil to discover a sport they can love for life.

Outstanding facilities

Our prowess on the sports field must at least in part be attributed to our fabulous sports facilities. We were the first independent school in the country to introduce a heated indoor swimming pool and indoor sports hall (our ambulacrum).

Our modernised 1000 acre campus now hosts thriving sports facilities, including a swimming pool, gym and strength and conditioning suite (used by Year 7 - Year 11), nine-hole golf course, Olympic-sized all-weather pitch, new 37 station fitness centre, indoor LTA registered tennis dome, outdoor tennis courts, croquet lawn, indoor shooting range and clay pigeon facility.

A Broad and Holistic Sporting Programme

Pupils can take part in 18 different sports with regular competitive fixtures, offering something for every interest and ability. Core sports include rugby, cricket, tennis, hockey and netball, alongside football, cross-country running, squash, basketball, fencing and swimming. Additional opportunities include polo, shooting (including an indoor range and clay pigeon shooting), outdoor pursuits and fitness activities.

Inter-line (house) competitions nurture teamwork and determination, while international tours offer opportunities to compete and train overseas.

Our holistic approach is further supported by a comprehensive Strength and Conditioning programme, alongside yoga and fitness provision, ensuring pupils develop physically, mentally and emotionally.

Alumni

Talented pupils are given opportunities to compete at county and national level and some go on to professional careers; we boast several international players in our alumni.

We are proud to include a number of international rugby players amongst our alumni including: Joe Ansbro (Scotland International); Will Greenwood, Kyran Bracken and Iain Balshaw (all members of the England International squad who won the 2003 Rugby World Cup).

Michael Richardson, OS05, is another of our successful sportsmen. Michael is a right-handed batsman who fields as a wicket-keeper and he made his debut for Durham in a first-class match against Durham MCCU in 2010.

Impressive array of sports facilities: tennis dome, squash courts, golf course, shooting range, swimming pool, heaps of sports pitches. Dazzling successes in boys’ and girls’ sport (rugby team won the Lancashire Cup and the girls had just returned from a netball tour to Dubai).
