Sport

Sport is part of our DNA

Sport is an essential component of Stonyhurst life, it’s in our DNA, and we encourage every pupil to discover a sport at Stonyhurst that they can love for life. We believe that participation in sport is an important element of a healthy lifestyle which enhances academic performance and fosters collaboration, concentration, self-confidence and leadership skills. We have a long history of sporting success, and have produced a number of international sportsmen in recent years.

All pupils are able to take part in a wide range of sporting activities including team and individual sports, in addition to inter-line (house) competitions, where teamwork and determination are nurtured. We are world-famous for rugby, producing numerous, county, professional an international level players and coaches. We also excel at cricket, tennis, hockey, and netball, amongst other games. Stonyhurst is represented in local and national fixtures, and international tours take our pupils all over the world. Additional sports include football, rounders, cross-country running, squash, basketball, polo, fencing, swimming, outdoor pursuits, horse riding, shooting (indoor range), clay pigeon shooting and scuba diving.

Outstanding facilities

Our prowess on the sports field must at least in part be attributed to our fabulous sports facilities. We were the first independent school in the country to introduce a heated indoor swimming pool and indoor sports hall (our ambulacrum).

Our modernised 1000 acre campus now hosts thriving sports facilities, including a swimming pool, nine-hole golf course, Olympic-sized all-weather pitch, new 37 station fitness centre, indoor LTA registered tennis dome, outdoor tennis courts, croquet lawn, indoor shooting range and clay pigeon facility.

Alumni

Talented pupils are given opportunities to compete at county and national level and some go on to professional careers; we boast several international players in our alumni.

We are proud to include a number of international rugby players amongst our alumni including: Joe Ansbro (Scotland International); Will Greenwood, Kyran Bracken and Iain Balshaw (all members of the England International squad who won the 2003 Rugby World Cup).

Michael Richardson, OS05, is another of our successful sportsmen. Michael is a right-handed batsman who fields as a wicket-keeper and he made his debut for Durham in a first-class match against Durham MCCU in 2010.

Impressive array of sports facilities: tennis dome, squash courts, golf course, shooting range, swimming pool, heaps of sports pitches. Dazzling successes in boys’ and girls’ sport (rugby team won the Lancashire Cup and the girls had just returned from a netball tour to Dubai).
