What is STEAM?
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. It is an interdisciplinary approach that connects these subjects, encouraging pupils to apply their learning creatively and collaboratively.
The reintroduction of Design and Technology and Textiles has enabled Stonyhurst to offer the full suite of STEAM subjects. Alongside Science, Mathematics, Computing, Art and Design, these subjects give pupils more opportunities to design, make, investigate and create.
Pupils can explore STEAM through classroom learning, GCSE and A level pathways, specialist projects, enrichment activities and careers-focused experiences. Our approach is designed to support both pupils who already have a clear interest in a particular area and those who are still discovering where their strengths lie.

STEAM at Stonyhurst
At Stonyhurst, STEAM education helps pupils develop the creativity, critical thinking and collaboration needed to solve real-world problems.
Bringing together Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, STEAM learning encourages pupils to explore ideas across subjects, work collaboratively and turn knowledge into practical action.
This approach is rooted in our Jesuit tradition. Jesuit education recognises the world as “charged with the grandeur of God” and affirms every element of creation as worthy of study, contemplation and exploration. It encourages a careful and critical engagement with technology, alongside the physical and social sciences, while giving equal importance to the imaginative, creative and emotional development of every pupil.
STEAM education brings this tradition into conversation with the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. It equips pupils to question, analyse, create, communicate and work effectively with others, while considering how their knowledge and ideas can make a positive difference in the world.
This reflects the Stonyhurst Learner Profile, encouraging pupils to be prepared, inquisitive, confident, independent and reflective. It also supports our aim to educate thoughtful, creative and collaborative agents for change.
Research published in the Journal of Educational Change has found that STEAM learning can support cross-disciplinary learning through collaboration and dialogue, helping to develop critical and creative thinking.
