Headmaster's Welcome

Welcome to Stonyhurst College Sixth Form where every pupil is enabled to fulfil his or her potential through our exceptionally high standard of teaching and pastoral care. Personal tutors, the Deputy Head and the Careers Department guide pupils in the important decisions they make about their future and through the university application process.

Stonyhurst encourages everyone to involve themselves fully in the many co-curricular opportunities offered to them. Living in a supportive and diverse community, pupils are helped to develop those qualities of character that will distinguish them in later life as 'Men and Women for Others'. A Jesuit education is a foundation for such a life, an education that nurtures individuality and encourages generosity.

Poetry and Rhetoric (Years 12 and 13) are two very formative and crucial years. I believe Stonyhurst offers an outstanding Sixth Form education and I look forward to welcoming you to it.

Throughout the website we have tried to convey something of the very special nature of Stonyhurst. I warmly invite you to come  and see us in action, so you may see for  yourself all that we have to offer.

About the Headmaster

John Browne was appointed Headmaster of Stonyhurst in 2016. Stonyhurst is John’s third Headship in independent boarding and day schools. Prior to joining Stonyhurst, John was Headmaster of St. Aloysius’s College Glasgow and deputy Headmaster of Ampleforth College and is also a former Headmaster of Westminster Cathedral Choir School. John is an alumnus of St Ignatius’s College Enfield, a Jesuit secondary school in London and obtained his BA (Hons) in Music from the University of Bristol.  He also has a postgraduate LLB from City University, London and a MBA.  John is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and a Governor of St John’s Beaumont, a Jesuit day and boarding preparatory school in Old Windsor. John is married to Marie, and they have a son, William and two dogs Henry and Hector.

At the heart of everything that we do is delivering an exceptional education for our pupils and ensuring that their formation, both inside and outside of the classroom, is of the highest standard. Years 12 - 13 at Stonyhurst College Sixth From are referred to as 'Higher Line', which offers three options for study – A level, International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) or the Cambridge Technical Diploma in Business or Sport.

We like to get to know our pupils as well as possible, to know what ‘makes them tick’ and to challenge them to achieve their personal best academically and in many other areas of school life. Academic performance and exam results are really important but we also place huge emphasis on emotional and spiritual growth too. Above all, we want the OS (Stonyhurst alumni) who leave us to be prepared to live a life of purpose as 'men and women for others'.

John Browne, Headmaster
