Stonyhurst’s U18 Hockey Team through to the next round of the Nationals!

Our U18 team took part in the National Schools Tournament at Stanley Park last Wednesday playing against Ripley St Thomas, Rossall, Kirkham Grammar and AKS. All strong hockey schools it was bound to be an exciting tournament. Stonyhurst got off to a good start winning their first game convincingly 3-0 with goals from Megan Wildish and Yaryna Antonyuk who scored the third goal in the final seconds of the game! This result gave our girls a big confidence boost going into the second game against Rossall who they had recently played and beaten in the Independent Schools Cup. The girls got two early goals from Megan Wildish and Eleanor Charles (Captain) Stonyhurst managed to defend well and keep the score line at 2-1.

Next up was Kirkham a very strong team with a high performing goal keeper, this made it very tough to get a goal past them and left Stonyhurst with their first loss of the tournament at 2-0.  Final match was against AKS.  A draw was enough for AKS to go through to the next round of the tournament as runners up, whereas Stonyhurst needed a win. Megan Wildish scored a brilliant goal putting Stonyhurst in the lead 1-0. The girls kept the intensity high in the dying minutes of the game in order to keep the score line in Stonyhurst’s favour sending them through to the next round of the National Schools Tournament as runners up. Captain Eleanor Charles won player of the tournament for Stonyhurst as she was an outstanding midfielder throughout every game.
